New EU systems
EES and ETIAS explained
Two new EU systems change how British travellers cross Europe's borders.

Entry/Exit System (EES)
EES began rolling out in October 2025. On your first entry, border officers register your fingerprints and facial image. It replaces passport stamps and tracks the 90/180-day limit automatically.
- Children under 12 don't give fingerprints.
- Expect longer queues at Dover, Eurostar and Eurotunnel at first.
ETIAS
ETIAS is a travel authorisation expected to launch in late 2026. Once live, you'll apply online before travel, and it will be linked to your passport for 3 years or until the passport expires.
- Apply only via the official EU website.
- A new passport means a new ETIAS.
